MEET jms saftey seRVICES President Jim Stepahin

Hi, I’m Jim Stepahin, founder of JMS Safety Services. After more than 30 years in the heavy construction industry, I launched JMS in 2024 with a mission to help organizations and workers create safer, more productive worksites.

My career has been dedicated to advancing safety and training in the construction industry. I served as the Executive Director of the Heavy Construction Contractors Association (HCCA) for over a decade. I worked closely with industry leaders to improve safety practices and keep abreast of the most current safety “hot-button” issues.

I continued my association management career with the Hampton Roads Utility and Heavy Contractors Association (HRUHCA). I started a safety training effort that provided instruction in temporary traffic work zone safety training and OSHA safety classes. I moved onto a National construction trade association as the Director of Safety and Training for the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) in Fairfax, Virginia. While at NUCA, I taught construction safety training classes and managed other important industry training initiatives (NUCA’s crew leader program).

After working for NUCA, I moved into a position as a Safety Training Specialist for United Rentals trench safety division. I traveled across the country, teaching many different construction safety classes and sharing practical knowledge with countless private heavy construction firms and municipal heavy construction and maintenance organizations. These experiences have given me a unique, nationwide perspective on the challenges and opportunities in construction safety.

At JMS Safety Services, I draw on this extensive background to provide engaging, practical training tailored to the unique challenges of the industry. From OSHA compliance, Miss Utility damage prevention, to temporary work zones in roadways and flagging, our class offerings are numerous and comprehensive. I work with teams of all sizes to ensure workers and organizations are prepared to tackle their jobs safely and effectively.

I’m a proud Virginia Tech graduate (B.S. Biology, ‘81) and hold a master’s of arts degree in education (MAT) from The Citadel, Military College of South Carolina. Outside of work, I’m a father of three and grandfather of four; family is at the heart of everything I do. When I’m not teaching or consulting, I enjoy playing with my grandkids, gardening, and following college football, pro football and college basketball.

If you are a heavy construction professional looking to ensure the safety of your workers, please contact me to discuss how I can help you achieve your goals.

Testimonials

Prior to the formation of JMS Safety Services, I served for five years as a Safety Training Specialist for United Rentals Trench Safety Division.

I traveled all over the country teaching many different safety classes for numerous private construction firms and municipal construction organizations.

United Rentals has a recognition program called the “1UR” award.

United Rentals President & CEO Matt Flannery writes to the person winning the award that:

“This recognition is yet another example that our team hasn’t lost sight of what it takes to provide exceptional customer service. You are the foundation of our 1UR Culture at United Rentals and your dedication is what separates us from the competition.”

I was fortunate to have received five “1UR” award coins during my tenure.

The following comments were provided with the coin so that the recipient knows the reasons that he was presented the award …

“Jim came in and taught the CPT (Competent Person Excavation Training) course to a group of 20 individuals at a class. This was my first time meeting Jim and he was excellent! Friendly. Knowledgeable and a good trainer! Thank You Jim!”
